In response to the call of the national initiative in the new era to promote the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, USTB, relying on its relevant national platforms, has carried out cooperative research with key large state-owned enterprises in fostering the development of the Bay Area. On September 30, USTB led the State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials (SKLAMM) and the National Center for Materials Service Safety (NCMS), two national platforms, to carry out with the State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC) to start the development and evaluation work on advanced energy metals and materials.

At the ceremony, the Sub-Laboratory for Ocean Energy and Hydrogen Energy Metal Materials (hereinafter referred as “Sub-laboratory”), established jointly by SKLAMM and SPIC Integrated Smart Energy Innovation Research Institute, was unveiled. Mr. NIE Xinping, Director of Hengqin Office of Guangdong Provincial Province; Mr. FU Yongge, Deputy Director of Hengqin Office; Mr. SHU Guogang, General Manager Assistant of SPIC and Director of China United Gas Turbine Technology CO.,Ltd.(UGTC); and Mr. ZHANG Weidong, Vice President of USTB, attended the ceremony.

At the ceremony, Mr. ZHANG emphasized that the development and opening up of Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin under the new circumstance is a key measure for the implementation ofOutline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and a major deployment to enrich the practice of “One Country, Two Systems”. USTB looks forward to contributing to the development of Hengqin and of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area by responding actively to the national construction initiative in this new era. Currently, the new round of scientific, technological, and industrial revolution is reconstructing the global innovation landscape and has posed various risks and challenges, which put forward higher and more urgent requirements for scientific and technological innovation in order to meet these difficulties positively. The CPC Central Committee and the State Council have issued the General Plan for Building a Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zonein Hengqin which states that “Science and technology research and high-end manufacturing industries should be developed, a batch of scientific and technological infrastructures in urgent need for development should be laid out, international large-scale scientific plans and projects should be organized, technological innovation and transformation center should be built, and industries such as Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things should be further developed”. USTB, with achievements, equipment and talent teams from its state platforms such as SKLAMM and NCMS, will cooperate closely with SPIC and UGTC in Hengqin, focusing on the construction of innovative platforms, the gathering of innovative talents and the transformation of results, to further strength the collaboration in researches of advanced metal materials such as ocean energy and hydrogen energy, and in technological innovations of hydrogen-doped gas turbines. USTB, together with SPIC and UGTC, working for the same goal, for the same task, as the same team, in the same mechanism, for the same wish, will seize new opportunities in Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone, work together to become the national technological support forces, meet the needs of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and serve the diversified economic development requirements of Macau.

Mr. SHU introduced that as the frontier of reform and opening up, Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin has an obvious regional advantages which make it play a leading role in cultivating the strength of the new Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cooperation area for participating in international competition. The proposal of the "Hengqin Plan" has injected new impetus into the diversified development of Macao's industries, and it’s also an indispensable part for the country's further opening up and high-quality development. The ceremony today has further enriched the connotation of cooperation between SPIC, the government and universities, and will undoubtedly contribute to the development of advanced materials and advanced energy industries in the Cooperation Zone.

Mr. NIE said that the development of scientific research and high-end manufacturing industries is a key task for fostering the diversified economic development of Macau. SKLAMM and NCMS are the supporting forces of national science forces and the introduction of such platforms will greatly enhance the level of Hengqin's scientific and technological research. Our main task is to lead the innovation of advanced material technologies, to make progress in industries, to accelerate the development of advanced material industries in the Cooperation Zone, and to serve the needs of the cultivation of innovative talents in Macao’s advanced material industry with the help of state key laboratories.

After the ceremony, participants had in-depth discussions on issues such as co-construction development strategy, industrial technology innovation, and technology transformation and upgrading.

The State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials (SKLAMM) of USTB is the first state key laboratory introduced in Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone. The laboratory was established in 1989 based on the discipline of materials and was the first batch of state key laboratories in the country. In the recent decade, SKLAMM has made fruitful systematic and original research achievements in the fields of design and applications of advanced steels, theory and applications of strengthening mechanism in metallic materials, multi-scale design of low-dimension materials and devices, manufacture technology of pivotal nonferrous metals, and applications of materials genome engineering. In the next step, SKLAMM will adjust its research direction to better meet the needs of the nation and to make greater contributions in the fields of manned space project, nuclear power project, major energy project, ocean project and other national major projects.
