Abstract: The microstructural design of materials is an important criterion to tailor the properties of materials. The hierarchical design of microstructures and control over the local chemical composition of materials give rise to far superior mechanical, physical and chemical properties compared to conventional materials. In this regard, recent developments on tailoring of macro meso nano structure and modification of local chemical composition in hierarchically structured materials and the influence on the evolution of properties will be presented. It will be shown that the design of hierarchical microstructures of metallic materials such as steels improve not only the room temperature properties but also the high temperature properties and expands the application criteria of stainless steels. The hierarchical design and tailoring of microporous ceramics at various length scales from macroscale to atomic scale will be discussed with a prospective to enhance their performance in applications in environment and energy sector. At the end, the concept of hierarchical design of materials will be presented for high entropy alloys and ceramics.
